[1] Tena samayena buddho bhagavā uruvelāyaṁ viharati najjā nerañjarāya tīre bodhirukkhamūle paṭhamābhisambuddho.Now on that occasion the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Uruvelā on the bank of the Nerañjarā River at the root of the Bodhi tree — the tree of awakening — newly fully awakened.
athakho bhagavā bodhirukkhamūle sattāhaṁ ekapallaṅkena nisīdi vimuttisukhapaṭisaṁvedī.Then he sat at the root of the Bodhi tree for seven days in one session, sensitive to the bliss of release.
(Mv.I.1.2) athakho bhagavā rattiyā paṭhamaṁ yāmaṁ paṭiccasamuppādaṁ anulomapaṭilomaṁ manasākāsiThen, in the first watch of the night, he gave close attention to dependent co-arising in forward and reverse order:
avijjāpaccayā saṅkhārāFrom ignorance as a requisite condition come fabrications.
saṅkhārapaccayā viññāṇaṁFrom fabrications as a requisite condition comes consciousness.
viññāṇapaccayā nāmarūpaṁFrom consciousness as a requisite condition comes name-&-form.
nāmarūpapaccayā saḷāyatanaṁFrom name-&-form as a requisite condition come the six sense media.
saḷāyatanapaccayā phassoFrom the six sense media as a requisite condition comes contact.
phassapaccayā vedanāFrom contact as a requisite condition comes feeling.
vedanāpaccayā taṇhāFrom feeling as a requisite condition comes craving.
taṇhāpaccayā upādānaṁFrom craving as a requisite condition comes clinging/sustenance.
upādānapaccayā bhavoFrom clinging/sustenance as a requisite condition comes becoming.
bhavapaccayā jātiFrom becoming as a requisite condition comes birth.

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hotiSuch is the origination of this entire mass of suffering & stress.
avijjāya tveva asesavirāganirodhā saṅkhāranirodhoFrom the remainderless fading and cessation of ignorance comes the cessation of fabrications.
saṅkhāranirodhā viññāṇanirodhoFrom the cessation of fabrications comes the cessation of consciousness.
viññāṇanirodhā nāmarūpanirodhoFrom the cessation of consciousness comes the cessation of name-&-form.
nāmarūpanirodhā saḷāyatananirodhoFrom the cessation of name-&-form comes the cessation of the six sense media.
saḷāyatananirodhā phassanirodhoFrom the cessation of the six sense media comes the cessation of contact.
phassanirodhā vedanānirodhoFrom the cessation of contact comes the cessation of feeling.
vedanānirodhā taṇhānirodhoFrom the cessation of feeling comes the cessation of craving.
taṇhānirodhā upādānanirodhoFrom the cessation of craving comes the cessation of clinging/sustenance.
upādānanirodhā bhavanirodhoFrom the cessation of clinging/sustenance comes the cessation of becoming.
bhavanirodhā jātinirodhoFrom the cessation of becoming comes the cessation of birth.
jātinirodhā jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā nirujjhantiFrom the cessation of birth, then aging-&-death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair all cease.
evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hotīti.Such is the cessation of this entire mass of suffering & stress.
(Mv.I.1.3) athakho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesiThen, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:
yadā have pātubhavanti dhammā ātāpino jhāyato brāhmaṇassa athassa kaṅkhā vapayanti sabbā yato pajānāti sahetudhammanti.

to the brahman — ardent, in jhāna —

his doubts all vanish

when he discerns

yadā have pātubhavanti dhammā ātāpino jhāyato brāhmaṇassa athassa kaṅkhā vapayanti sabbā yato khayaṁ paccayānaṁ avedīti.

(Mv.I.1.7) athakho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesiThen, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:
yadā have pātubhavanti dhammā ātāpino jhāyato brāhmaṇassa vidhūpayaṁ tiṭṭhati mārasenaṁ suriyova obhāsayamantalikkhanti.
